Ascend Version 3 – To the Cloud!

In General,Version Updates on May 22, 2012 by mhoggatt Tagged: , , , ,

We’re excited to announce that work on Ascend Version 3, our next major platform, is underway with an expected release date of Q2 2013.  Before then you will see two more major upgrades to Version 2.  Version 2.4 will be released next month on June 11th.  Click here for a preview of the changes that are included.  We’ll preview Version 2.5 at Trek World in August and will release it to everyone on September 17th.  After that, all new enhancement work will be done in Version 3.

The biggest change with Version 3 is that it will be hosted in the cloud.  This will provide several benefits including:

  • Fast & easy feature and fix delivery:  When new features and fixes are ready, we’ll be able to release them to everyone at the same time.  You won’t have to do your own updates.
  • Accessibility:  You’ll be able to access Ascend from anywhere with a web browser.
  • Centralized Data:  Your data will be centrally hosted and backed up for you.
  • More time on enhancements:  By not having to deploy updates to over 900 locations, we can spend less time worrying about update installers and more time programming enhancements that are important to you.

We know you will have questions about many topics such as speed, reliability security, and data access.  Please watch this blog in future weeks for answers to your questions and for project updates.

Please note that Version 1 will no longer be supported once Version 3 is released.  Before you can upgrade to V3, you will need to be on Version 2 first.  So if you’re part of the small group that hasn’t yet upgraded, you should start planning a time to get this done.  Consult our upgrade guide for full details on the process.

We look forward to working with you on this project!

Version 2.4 – Early Release Update

In General,Version Updates on May 15, 2012 by mhoggatt Tagged: , , , , , , , , , ,

Today we previewed and released Ascend Version 2.4 to our Early Release Team of dealers.  We will make it available to all dealers next month on June 11th.

Here are some highlights of what we previewed for them today:

  • When you choose to unreconcile a category, Ascend now asks if you want to unreconcile its child categories.
  • On Ascend Online Reports we added an Email Usage Report that shows a history of all the messages you send.
  • We added a check box option to the Change Due Screen to print a large, full-page receipt.
  • There’s a new option to specify a header for your large receipts.  See my April 24th blog for more details.
  • You now have the ability to specify SMS capable numbers in the Customer window.  This has been added so that, in Version 2.5, you can send text messages to your customers from Ascend.
  • In the revamped In-Store Product Export screen you can now check a box to include products in child categories to your search results.

Please make sure to join us on June 12th or 13th for our webinars to cover these items and more.

I also gave our Early Release Team a preview of our next major platform, Version 3, due out for release in 2013.  That will be the subject of my blog next week.

The Ascend “Best Support” Program

In General on May 8, 2012 by mhoggatt Tagged: , , , , , , , ,

If you’ve been with Ascend for a while, you’ve heard me say “Best System. Best Support” many times. We provide the best support to help you fully utilize Ascend and implement it into your business. The investment we make to provide this level of support is significant.  We encourage you to make the most of your investment in this program.

Stay current with the latest updates and use the new features

We provide regular updates to Ascend, Ascend Analytics and Ascend Online reports. If you don’t have accounts yet for Analytics or Online reports, contact our support team to get them.

Call when you need help

Wherever I go, I’m consistently told that the Ascend Support Techs are the best compared to any system or program that people have ever worked with. They’re available to answer your calls and e-mails on weekdays. Every weeknight and on weekends, we also have a technician on call to help you with any emergency situation.

Find answers and get training at your convenience

We have a host of resources that you can use anytime, day or night, to help you out. Use the on-line help system connected to Ascend. Go to the support pages on Ascendrms.com for links to webinars, user and install guides and Ascend University courses.  If you don’t have log-in’s for Ascend U, contact us to get them.

Get help with your QuickBooks

Between your daily general ledger entries and entering your Trek invoices, we can help save you hours of time every week. If you haven’t yet taken advantage of this part of the support program, make this the year to do it.

Keep your product information up to date

With your help, the Vendor Update program grows every year. We continue to get product lists from more suppliers and we continue to invest more time and resources to insure the quality and timeliness of the information.

We will continue to do everything we can to provide you with the Best Support. Please make the most of it for yourself and your business.

Why are you working on that?

In General,Version Updates on May 1, 2012 by mhoggatt Tagged: ,

We at Ascend are lucky. We work for a great company (Trek). We support a great product that helps hundreds of cycling retailers around the world. And we have passionate and involved customers that want to help make Ascend the best system it can be.

I’m often asked: “Why are you working on <fill in the blank> when you should be working on <fill in the blank>?”. It’s a fair question. But nearly every time the question is asked, the “fill in the blanks” are different. We established the UserVoice forum to help with this.  It helps paint a clear picture of what’s most important to our overall body of customers.

The UserVoice forum has been up for over a year. Over 150 of you have submitted and voted on more than 180 ideas. There are clear favorites at the top of the list. The top 20 ideas have received over 50% of the votes. So the next logical questions are”Why don’t you start at the top of the list and work your way down?” and “Why do you work on ideas that are farther down on the list or not even on the list?”  Again, fair questions.  Here are some answers:

All ideas are not created equal:

The ideas at the top of the list are big projects. We call them “epics”. They take a lot of time in advance to research and design before development work can begin.  Once development work begins, the tasks need to be done in a certain order and spread out over time to make sure they work properly. And some projects don’t make sense to do before other improvements are made.

We must keep pace with the future:

Many of the things we’ve been working on aren’t at the top of the UserVoice list. It’s our responsibility to help move Ascend forward to keep pace with business and technology changes.  Our eCommerce integration work is an example of that. Retailers today need be developing a multi-channel strategy and we need to support that. Technology is evolving at warp speed.  People want and need access to data and functionality from anywhere with any device. We need to keep pace with this.

We must stay competitive:

Our business, like all others, needs to have healthy growth. To sustain the continued innovation of Ascend and the investment in it, we need to look at enhancements that help us gain new business.

“Small hinges swing big doors”:

It’s not feasible to work on too many big projects at the same time. That leaves time for us to include small changes that don’t take as much effort. When we have this time, I look for “small hinges”.  These are small changes that will have a big positive impact for you.  We mine the UserVoice forum for these ideas and talk to support techs who know what ideas they’re hearing about the most.

Sometimes we don’t have a choice:

A few years ago a letter was forwarded to us from several dealers in California. The letter said they must have customer facing price displays or face hefty fines. From that our pole display integration was born. Just recently some of our Canadian dealers told us that their government is discontinuing the penny. We will have to make changes in Ascend to accommodate this. Other changes like this are bound to come up in the future.

Even though we might not be working down the UserVoice list in order,  your ideas and votes are vital to guiding our plans and priorities for the coming years.  If you don’t have an account, contact the Ascend Support Team to get one.  You’re allowed one per location.  If you haven’t checked out the forum lately, go to http://ascendrms.uservoice.com to see the latest ideas.

Thank You!

Mark
